At what age can you introduce fats like olive oil, or flax seed oil in a baby's diet?
My baby's 8 and a half months, and by now eats oat, rice, and millet cereals, and most fruits and veggies. She's also breastfed.
There is no reason to withhold olive oil as very few people are allergic to it. Flax seed oil should also be safe, but you might want to wait until 9 months. Fats and oils are of course very much needed by toddlers for proper brain development, however you shouldn't neglect animal based fats as these are easier to digest for toddlers. Egg yolks in particular contain choline which is needed for brain development, and now you can get eggs with DHA.
You should be adding meat at this point (actually it is recommended at 6 months) because a diet high in cereal does not meet the iron, zinc, and protein needs of toddlers once breastmilk consumption is reduced. I know high cereal diets are the current norm, but the trends are changing back to earlier "weaning" diets all of which contained meat (the original pablum contained bone marrow)
